"Ekenyagwechwechachwecheria"
“TICAH (Trust for Indigenous Culture and Health) is a Nairobi-based organization dedicated to promoting indigenous culture, health, and well-being. Their vision is a safe and just world where rights are realized, the beauty of culture and diversity is celebrated, and holistic health is attained. Through their Art for Connection and Healing Program, TICAH amplifies community action to realize the transformative power of culture for fundamental rights, holistic health, and social well-being.”
Services Provided
Videography: produced individual documentaries for each artist, capturing their personal stories of loss, resilience, and transformation.
Photography: documented the exhibition, workshops, and intimate moments of connection between the artists.
The Story
“Ekenyagwechwechachwecheria” is a Kisii word for a type of lizard that changes color like a chameleon, blending into its environment and appearing and disappearing mysteriously. For Elkana, Musa, Iddi, and Moses, this word became a metaphor for the complex, up-and-down process of grief and transition after losing loved ones. Each artist shared their unique journey of loss and transformation, weaving together sorrow, resilience, and the enduring power of love and connection.
Elkana, who lost his wife, spoke of adjusting to a new chapter in life.
Musa reflected on the relationships he formed during his daughter’s illness, realizing how interconnected the world truly is.
Iddi shared how her mother continues to appear in her dreams, whole and well.
Moses found meaning in the connections he made with others during his daughter’s treatment.
Together, these artists explored the unspoken connections between their art and life experiences, creating a space for open conversations about loss, change, and healing.
Acious Media was honored to document this deeply personal and transformative project. Through videography and photography, we captured the raw emotions, artistic expressions, and profound connections that emerged from this collaboration. Our goal was to preserve these stories and amplify their impact, ensuring that the beauty and wisdom of these experiences could reach a wider audience.”
Impact
“The Ekenyagwechwechachwecheria project not only celebrated the resilience and creativity of the artists but also sparked important conversations about grief, loss, and healing. The documentaries and photographs were shared on TICAH’s YouTube channel and social media platforms, reaching a global audience and inspiring others to reflect on their own journeys of transformation. This project is a testament to the power of art and storytelling in fostering connection, understanding, and healing.”
